What is AdBlue®?

AdBlue® is an aqueous solution used in diesel engines equipped with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology..
Although often considered an additive, it is not mixed with the fuel; instead, it is a chemical reagent injected into the exhaust system, where it helps convert nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless substances for the environment.

AdBlue® is a registered trademark of the Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA), the German automotive manufacturers’ association, which guarantees its quality according to ISO 22241 – DIN 70070 and AUS 32 standards..

 

Chemical Composition of AdBlue®

AdBlue® consists of:

  • 32.5% synthetic urea, produced from ammonia and carbon dioxide

  • 67.5% demineralized water, ensuring the purity of the solution

It is a colorless, non-flammable, non-toxic, biodegradable liquid that is safe to handle.
Although not hazardous, prolonged contact with skin and eyes should be avoided, and it should be stored away from contamination by dust, fuels, or oils.

 

Purpose of AdBlue®

The main function of AdBlue® is to drastically reduce harmful emissions from diesel engines, particularly nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are major contributors to air pollution.

Through its use, NOx is converted into nitrogen (N₂) and water vapor (H₂O)both harmless to the environment.

This process enables diesel vehicles to meet the limits set by Euro IV, Euro V, and especially Euro VI standards, which are mandatory for all new vehicles.

 

How it works in SCR systems

AdBlue® operates within SCR systems, an advanced catalyst installed in diesel vehicle exhausts. The process occurs in four stages:

  1. During combustion, the engine produces nitrogen oxides (NOx);

  2. Before the gases reach the atmosphere, AdBlue® is injected into the exhaust system

  3. At high temperatures, the urea decomposes into ammonia (NH₃);

  4. The ammonia reacts with NOx in the SCR catalyst, converting it into nitrogen and water.

The result is a clean exhaust gas that complies with environmental standards..

 

Which Vehicles Use AdBlue®

SCR technology, initially adopted in Euro 4 and Euro 5 heavy vehicles, has been extended since 2014 to cars with Euro 6 standards.

AdBlue® is therefore used in:

  • Diesel passenger cars Euro 4, 5, and 6

  • Trucks and vans

  • Diesel-powered railway vehicles

  • Off-road machinery (tractors, excavators, cranes, combine harvesters, port and airport equipment, construction and mining machinery)

  • Boats and maritime sector vehicles
